Caer Wood

Walk far enough into Caer Wood and you'll forget you're barely five miles from Hereford town centre. The forest sprawls across rolling terrain with proper mixed woodland - oak, beech, ash - the kind of place where you actually notice the seasons changing. Paths wind through decent stretches, some muddy in winter, others bone-dry come July. You won't find it crammed with visitors or facilities. There's no cafe, no visitor centre, no interpretive boards telling you what you're looking at. That's rather the point.

It's ideal for walkers after a genuine woodland experience without the peak-season crowds of more famous Herefordshire spots. Families with restless kids might manage an hour here comfortably, though there's not much to hold their attention if they're after playgrounds or dramatic features. History types will be interested to know the woodland has Romano-British connections, though there's little to actually see on the ground.

Allow 90 minutes to two hours for a decent circuit. Go in autumn when the light turns amber through the canopy, or spring when everything's ridiculous with growth. Check conditions after heavy rain - the paths get waterlogged.

If you're staying at Goytree Glamping or Grove Farm Glamping nearby, it's a solid morning walk before you settle back at your accommodation. Not a destination in itself, but a proper addition to a Herefordshire break where you want quiet forest time rather than another tourist tick-box.
