Rolling countryside stretches endlessly beyond medieval cathedral towers, where red sandstone walls have watched over the River Wye for nearly a thousand years. Hereford might lack the tourist crowds of Bath or York, but that's precisely its charm - this is a proper working market town where farmers still bring cattle to sell and locals debate cider varieties with genuine passion.

Hereford Cathedral dominates the city centre, housing the famous Mappa Mundi and chained library that draws history buffs from across Europe. The surrounding streets feel refreshingly unpolished. You'll find proper pubs serving Herefordshire beef rather than gastropub nonsense, and independent shops that haven't been swept away by chain stores.

Beyond the town limits lies some of England's most underrated landscape. The Black Mountains rise to the west, while gentle valleys roll towards the Malverns in the east. White Castle Vineyard produces surprisingly decent wines from these slopes - worth a visit if you fancy something different from the usual cream tea routine. Several ancient woodlands like Cwm Wood and Paradise Wood offer proper walking without the crowds you'd find in the Cotswolds.

Getting here takes a bit of effort without a car - the train line runs to Newport and Birmingham, but you're looking at two hours plus from London. That remoteness works in your favour though. Staying at one of the nearby farm campsites or glamping spots gives you perfect access to both the cathedral city and the wider county, where every village seems to hide at least one decent pub and a Norman church worth photographing.

Herefordshire moves at its own pace. Shops close early midweek, Sunday lunch bookings are essential, and conversations tend to involve weather, farming, and rugby in equal measure.
