Walking through Cwm Wood feels like stepping properly off the beaten track - ancient broadleaf woodland that's been here far longer than anyone's bothered to put up signage about it. The forest sits just outside Hereford, close enough for an afternoon trip but remote enough that you'll forget the city exists once you're under the canopy.

It's a straightforward woodland walk through mixed trees, dappled light filtering through in that way that makes everything feel hushed and slower. No fancy facilities, no visitors centre, just paths that wind through the undergrowth. The sort of place you'd bring kids if they actually like being outdoors rather than needing a gift shop at the end of it. History types might find the landscape itself interesting - old woodland in the Herefordshire hills tells a story if you know how to read it.

There's no entrance fee or visible operating hours because it's proper woodland, not a manicured attraction. Turn up when it suits you, though morning light is worth planning for. Allow an hour minimum if you're just having a wander, longer if you're the type to actually notice things.

Stay at one of the glamping spots nearby - Goytree or Grove Farm are both within a few miles - and you've got a proper forest escape without feeling like you've driven hours to get there. It pairs well with exploring Hereford itself or heading further into the Wye Valley. Not Instagram-friendly, which is exactly why it's worth your time.
