Hereford

Apple orchards stretch as far as the eye can see here, creating a patchwork of green that defines this corner of rural Herefordshire. This is cider country proper - where the fruit that built Britain's oldest brewing traditions still grows on centuries-old trees.

Hereford itself might be the county town, but out here in the HR2 postcode you're surrounded by working countryside that hasn't changed much in generations. The landscape rolls gently between ancient woodlands like Timberline Wood and Mowbage Plantation, where footpaths wind through stands of oak and ash that have stood since medieval times. It's walking country first and foremost.

Newbarns Hill offers the best views across the Wye Valley, though it's a bit of a trek to reach the top. Worth it on a clear day when you can see right into Wales. The network of smaller woods - Ashley Coppice, Eaton Hill Wood, and Bradley's Wood among them - creates brilliant circular walks that rarely see crowds, even at weekends.

Saint Faith church sits quietly in this rural setting, its Norman stonework a reminder of how long people have called this patch of Herefordshire home. The building feels properly ancient, with that particular hush you only find in countryside churches.

Getting here means driving - Hereford city centre is your nearest railway station, about twenty minutes away by car. The A49 runs close by, making this surprisingly accessible despite feeling properly remote. Base yourself at one of the local campsites and you've got direct access to some of the finest walking in the county, plus you're well-placed for day trips into the Brecon Beacons or the Forest of Dean.
