Ton Wood

Ancient oaks tower overhead as you follow the winding paths through this small but atmospheric woodland just outside Hereford. Ton Wood isn't going to fill a whole day, but it's exactly the sort of place that makes a proper woodland walk feel special rather than just exercise.

Families with younger children will find it manageable - the paths aren't too demanding and there's enough fallen timber and interesting nooks to keep little ones engaged for an hour or so. Dog walkers clearly know about this spot, judging by the well-worn tracks, and it's the kind of place where you might spot a red kite circling overhead if you're lucky.

The wood has that lovely dappled light quality that makes even a grey day feel atmospheric. It's free to wander (as far as I could tell), though parking might be a bit hit and miss depending on where you access it from the Hereford side.

For those staying at nearby sites like Poston Mill or The Fold, it's worth the short drive if you fancy stretching your legs somewhere that feels genuinely rural rather than park-like. Preston Campsite and Chapel House Farm are also well-placed for a quick woodland detour. Just don't expect signposted trails or facilities - this is proper countryside walking where you make your own entertainment.
