Stockley Coppice

Walking into Stockley Coppice feels like stepping back into working woodland - the kind of place where you notice things most people miss. This is proper mixed forest a few miles west of Hereford, where you'll find coppiced hazel, oak standards, and the sort of dappled light that makes you forget about your phone for a while. The paths wind through what's clearly been managed for centuries, and if you know what you're looking at, you can read the history in the way the trees grow.

It's excellent for anyone who actually enjoys walking rather than just ticking off mileage. Birdwatchers should bring binoculars - woodpeckers, nuthatches, and tawny owls are all regular. Children will find it engaging if they're the type to hunt for fungi or turn over logs, less so if they need constant entertainment. Walkers heading out from nearby Hereford will appreciate the quietness and the absence of crowds that can blight more famous forests.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, which is rather the point. Access appears to be free, and you can wander for anything from a quick thirty-minute circuit to a couple of hours depending on how many detours you fancy. Spring is when the wildflower floor really shows itself.

If you're based at one of the local holiday parks - The Fold, Poston Mill, or Burhope Farm are all within easy reach - Stockley Coppice makes a proper morning out. It's not dramatic scenery, but it's real woodland, and that counts for a lot.
