Driffield

Market squares don't come much quieter than Driffield's on a Tuesday afternoon. This proper Yorkshire market town has been trading since medieval times, and it shows - in the best possible way. The weekly Saturday market still draws folk from miles around, but catch it midweek and you'll have the Georgian streets largely to yourself.

All Saints Church dominates the town centre with its impressive spire, while scattered around the surrounding countryside you'll find fascinating remnants of ancient settlements. The Argam Dikes earthworks tell stories stretching back centuries, and if you're keen on a bit of archaeological detective work, the various tumuli dotting the landscape offer glimpses into Bronze Age life.

What really sets this area apart is the countryside. North Wood provides decent walking, and the network of smaller plantations like Fox Covert and Jerry Plantation break up the rolling farmland beautifully. Kelk Lake, just outside town, is a lovely spot for an afternoon stroll - though don't expect mountain scenery. This is gentle, agricultural Yorkshire at its most unpretentious.

Getting here is straightforward enough - the A614 runs right through town, and Hull's only about 25 miles southeast if you need proper shopping or transport links. Driffield itself has a railway station with connections to Hull and beyond, making it surprisingly well connected for such a quiet place.

Staying at one of the holiday parks dotted around the area makes perfect sense. You're well positioned for day trips to the coast - Bridlington's beaches are a short drive east - while having the peaceful Wolds countryside right on your doorstep. It's the sort of place where you can properly unwind without feeling like you're in the middle of nowhere.
