Kelk Lake

You'll find Kelk Lake just outside Driffield, a proper East Yorkshire spot that punches well above its weight for a quiet afternoon out. It's a glacial mere - one of those natural lakes that formed when the ice sheets melted thousands of years ago - and it's the sort of place where you can actually think without screaming kids and ice cream vans.

The water's lovely and clear, and the banks are well-wooded, which means decent bird-watching if you're into that sort of thing. There's a walking path around it that takes maybe forty minutes without rushing, and it's flat enough for most ages, though muddy patches catch you out after rain. The whole area feels genuinely remote despite being within spitting distance of Driffield - you get views across the fields and a real sense of being somewhere proper.

It's free to visit, which helps. Bring binoculars if you've got them, and time it for early morning or dusk when the light's better and you'll see more wildlife. Families with walkers aged eight or up will get proper value here; younger kids might find it a bit slow unless they're into spotting ducks.

If you're based at one of the coastal parks nearby - Barmston Beach or Skipsea Sands are only twenty minutes' drive away - Kelk makes a solid counterpoint to the seaside bustle. It's not showy, but it's exactly what a countryside lake should be.
