There's an ancient mound just outside Driffield that most people drive straight past without noticing. This is a tumulus - an Iron Age burial site that's been sitting in the East Yorkshire landscape for roughly 2,500 years, quietly marking where someone important was laid to rest.

You won't find visitor facilities or interpretation boards here. It's essentially a grassy hump in a field, maybe 30 feet across and perhaps 10 feet high depending on which tumulus you're looking at. If you're expecting something dramatic, you'll be disappointed.

It takes about 10 minutes to look around, tops. There's no charge and no opening hours to worry about - it's always accessible. The walk from Driffield town centre is straightforward enough. Bring decent shoes though, as you'll be crossing fields and the ground gets boggy after rain.

If you're based at Thorpe Hall Cottages nearby - less than a mile away - it makes sense to combine this with a walk around the local farmland. The site works best alongside a proper exploration of the Yorkshire Wolds or a day trip to Bridlington, which has actual beaches and proper attractions worth your time. For serious history enthusiasts planning a longer stay at one of the seaside parks like South Cliff or Seaways, this scratches the archaeology itch without eating up a whole afternoon.
