Argam Dikes

Three massive Bronze Age earthworks stretch across the Yorkshire Wolds near Driffield, forming what many consider the most impressive prehistoric boundary system in northern England. These ancient ditches and banks, known as the Argam Dikes, run for several miles across the landscape and would have represented a colossal undertaking for Bronze Age communities around 3,000 years ago.

Walking along these earthworks today, you get a real sense of the scale of prehistoric engineering. The central dike stands over two metres high in places, with deep ditches flanking either side. Archaeological evidence suggests they marked territorial boundaries or perhaps corralled livestock across vast areas of the Wolds.

History enthusiasts and serious walkers will find this the most rewarding, though it's hardly a quick family jaunt. Allow at least two hours to appreciate the full extent, and bring proper walking boots as the terrain can get muddy. The site is freely accessible year-round, though spring and summer offer the best conditions for exploring.

From holiday parks around Bridlington like Haven Reighton Sands or Primrose Valley, it's a short drive inland to this remarkable piece of prehistory. Few visitors bother making the trip, which means you'll likely have these ancient earthworks to yourself - a rare treat in increasingly crowded Yorkshire.
