Berkhamsted

A medieval market town where the Grand Union Canal cuts a green ribbon through the High Street. That's Berkhamsted for you - proper old England with enough modern life to keep things interesting.

The town sits in a gap in the Chiltern Hills, which explains why it became such an important stopping point centuries ago. You can still see remnants of Berkhamsted Castle, where the Black Prince once held court, though these days it's more famous for being where Graham Greene went to school. The High Street runs parallel to the canal, and watching narrowboats chug past while you're having a pint is oddly therapeutic.

Walking opportunities here are frankly excellent. Ashridge Estate sprawls across the hills to the north - hundreds of acres of ancient woodland and heathland that turn spectacular colours come autumn. Pitstone Hill and Ivinghoe Beacon offer proper views across the Chilterns, while Steps Hill provides a gentler climb if you're feeling less ambitious. The Ridgeway National Trail passes right through, so serious hikers are well catered for.

Tring sits just a few miles north, connected by regular trains to London Euston in under 40 minutes. That proximity to the capital means Berkhamsted can get busy at weekends, but midweek it settles back into its market town rhythm. The antique shops do decent trade, and there's a good farmers' market on Saturdays.

Staying at one of the nearby parks puts you right in the heart of Chilterns walking country while keeping London within easy reach. Several sites offer everything from basic camping to glamping options, perfect for exploring both the hills and the historic towns tucked into these valleys.
