Belford

Three miles from the coast but worlds away from tourist crowds, this small Northumberland town sits at the crossroads of ancient drovers' routes. The A1 sweeps past without pause, leaving Belford to its own quiet rhythms. Market Cross still marks the old trading spot, while the War Memorial stands proud on the main street.

From here, the Cheviot Hills roll west towards Scotland. Camp Hill and Hay Hill offer proper walks with views across to Holy Island on clear days. The twin Swinhoe Lakes make for peaceful fishing spots, tucked between Brownridge Plantation and Quarry Plantation where red squirrels still thrive.

Belford's real draw is its position. Bamburgh Castle looms just five miles east. Lindisfarne Centre sits nearby, making this an ideal launching pad for exploring the Northumberland coast. The ruined medieval chapel hints at the area's deep history, while Hazelrigg Tower speaks of Border conflicts that once raged here.

Getting here couldn't be easier - the A1 drops you right into town, with Edinburgh two hours north and Newcastle an hour south. It's not flashy, but Belford works brilliantly as a base. The surrounding holiday parks at Glororum and Budle Bay put you within striking distance of both coast and hills, without the premium prices of staying right on the seafront at Seahouses or Bamburgh.
