Yr Eifl (Garn Ganol)

The walk up Yr Eifl - also known as Garn Ganol - rewards you with one of the best views across the Llŷn Peninsula. It's a proper hill rather than a mountain, 564 metres at its highest point, but don't let that fool you into thinking it's an easy stroll. The path climbs steeply through moorland, and the final push to the summit involves scrambling over rocky sections that demand a bit of care.

What makes it worth the effort is the panorama from the top. On a clear day you can see across to Anglesey and out towards Snowdonia. The wind can be fierce up here - bring a windproof - but that same exposure means the views feel properly earned rather than handed to you on a plate.

This walk suits experienced hikers who don't mind a steep ascent and loose ground underfoot. Young children might struggle with the final rocky section, though determined walkers of any age can manage it in good conditions. Allow two to three hours for the round trip from Pwllheli, which sits just 2-3 miles away on the coast.

It's free to walk, naturally. Visit midweek if you can avoid weekend crowds. Several campsites cluster within a few miles - Away From It All and Gyrn Ddu are closest - making this an easy add-on if you're basing yourself in the area for a longer stay. The walk feels wild and remote despite its proximity to town, which is rare on the Llŷn.
