Yr Adwy Goch

Standing stones don't get much more atmospheric than this Bronze Age burial chamber perched on Anglesey's eastern coast. Yr Adwy Goch - literally 'the red gap' in Welsh - consists of two upright stones supporting a hefty capstone, creating a proper ancient gateway that's survived over 3,000 years of Welsh weather.

The setting is what makes this one special. Unlike some stone circles that end up surrounded by car parks, this dolmen sits in open farmland with views across the Menai Strait towards Snowdonia. On a clear day, you can pick out the peaks while pondering what Bronze Age people were thinking when they hauled these massive stones into position.

History buffs will love the mystery of it all - archaeologists reckon it was originally covered by an earth mound, making it a proper burial chamber rather than the stark monument you see today. Kids might need a bit of imagination to get excited, though the climb up from the road and the sheer size of the capstone usually does the trick.

It's a short walk from the nearest parking spot, but proper walking boots are wise as the ground can get boggy. The site sits just outside Brynteg, making it an easy detour if you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Glan Gors or Rhos Farm. Allow half an hour unless you're planning a longer coastal ramble.
