Yockenthwaite Pot

You'll find this one tucked into the moorland between Leyburn and Settle - a proper sinkhole that's swallowed a stream whole. Yockenthwaite Pot isn't some grand cathedral cave system; it's smaller and wilder than that, which is precisely why it works. The stream vanishes underground here, and if you're game for a bit of scrambling, you can follow it into the darkness for a short distance before good sense (and the drop ahead) tells you to turn back.

This is walkers' territory. The locals round here treat it as part of a larger route across the limestone fells, and you'll stumble upon it while doing the same - it's not a destination in isolation, more a brilliant punctuation mark on a day out. The approach is straightforward enough, though the ground around the pot entrance can be boggy and loose underfoot, so proper boots matter. Twenty minutes exploring the immediate area is the sweet spot; kids old enough to manage uneven terrain will find it genuinely thrilling, though you're not spending hours here.

Free, obviously. No gates, no hours, no fanfare. Go when the weather's been dry so you're not wading in flood water. If you're staying at Stablefell Holidays nearby, this makes an excellent half-day walk from base. The surrounding landscape - rolling moorland with proper fell views - is just as memorable as the pot itself. Worth the detour if you're already in the area; probably not worth planning your entire North Yorkshire trip around, but that's not really the point.
