Heck Brow

Heck Brow is a proper fell walk in the Yorkshire Dales, rising 1,735 feet above Leyburn with views across Wensleydale that'll stop you mid-stride. The climb itself isn't punishing - you're looking at an hour or so up from the valley floor - but the reward is a wide, windswept summit with the sort of panoramic vistas that make the huffing and puffing worthwhile. On clear days the Pennines roll out like rumpled blankets in every direction.

It's a walker's outing, really. The sort of place where families with older kids will thrive, though younger ones might find the exposed final section a bit exposed for comfort when the wind picks up. You don't need specialist gear, just decent boots and a sense of humour when the weather turns - which it will, because this is the Dales.

There's no visitor centre or facilities at the summit itself, so bring water and pack a decent sandwich. Most people allow a half-day for the round trip, which gives you time to linger at the top without rushing. The nearest proper base is Leyburn, a market town that's genuinely pleasant for an evening wander.

If you're staying at Stablefell Holidays or Cherish Glamping - both within five miles - this makes an excellent morning or early afternoon detour. Pair it with one of the gentler valley walks if you've got mixed abilities in your group. It's the sort of fell that reminds you why people come back to this corner of Yorkshire year after year.
