Stake Fell

Stake Fell isn't a dramatic peak - it's honest fell walking in the Yorkshire Dales, accessible without scrambling or Alpine pretension. The summit sits at just over 2,000 feet and rewards you with proper views across Wensleydale and beyond, though you'll share the ridge with walkers far more often than you'll find solitude.

The approach from Leyburn takes roughly three hours up and back. You can park near the base and follow established paths up through moorland and rough grassland - it's relentless rather than technical, and muddy after rain. The fell itself is bare, windswept, genuine fell country with nothing polished or packaged about it.

Families with older kids manage it fine on a clear day. The views justify the slog, but it's not one for toddlers or anyone expecting cafe stops. Walkers after a proper workout without serious scrambling will get real value from it.

Timing matters. Go early to beat the crowds (yes, they come), and avoid the worst weather - exposure up there is genuine. Summer gives you daylight enough to dawdle and take photographs properly.
