Green Scar Top

The walk up Green Scar Top from Leyburn is straightforward enough, though the final push to the 1,100-metre summit feels steeper than you'd expect from the map. On a clear day - and you'll want to wait for one - the Wensleydale views are proper impressive: rolling moorland stretching all the way across, with Pen-y-ghent visible if the light's right.

It's not a technical climb. Most fit walkers manage it in under two hours round trip, though you can easily spend another hour pottering about at the top, picking out landmarks below. The path is well-trodden but can be boggy after rain, so decent boots are essential. There's a cairn at the summit and space to sit, though the weather can turn quickly up here.

Families with teenagers will find it manageable. Younger kids might struggle with the final steep bit, and toddlers will hate it. History buffs won't find much - it's pure hill walking territory. What you're really after is the walk itself and the views that come with it.

Stay at Stablefell Holidays or Cherish Glamping - both within spitting distance - and you can tackle this as a morning outing before exploring Wensleydale proper. Hawes Caravan Club is also close if you prefer somewhere more formal. The whole area's good for walking, so don't treat Green Scar Top as a one-off.
