Middle Tongue

The walk up Middle Tongue starts easy enough, a gentle climb through moorland that feels properly remote for somewhere so close to Leyburn. The peak itself sits at 604 metres, commanding views across Wensleydale that stretch for miles on a clear day - you can see right across to the higher fells beyond. It's one of those walks that rewards you without absolutely destroying your legs, making it ideal for families who want a proper hill experience without the slog up something like Pen-y-ghent.

Allow two to three hours for the round trip from the car park, longer if you want to potter about at the top with a flask and a sandwich. The path is well-trodden and marked, though it can get boggy lower down after heavy rain. Walkers and keen photographers get the most from it - the light changes constantly across the valley below, and you're genuinely off the beaten track despite being minutes from civilisation.

There's no visitor centre or facilities at the peak itself, so come prepared with water and snacks. It's completely free, no permits or costs involved. Early morning trips catch the mist rising off the valley floor, which is rather magical. The location works brilliantly if you're based at Stablefell Holidays just down the road - it's practically on your doorstep. Even if you're camping at Hawes, it's a short drive away and worth the effort. The Wensleydale landscape is big and open; Middle Tongue gives you a proper perspective on just how much countryside surrounds you.
