Middle Tongue Tarn

The walk up to Middle Tongue Tarn takes you through proper moorland - the kind of terrain that makes you feel like you've left civilization properly behind. It's a small mountain lake perched above Leyburn, and honestly, the journey matters more than the destination here. You're looking at a good couple of hours round trip from the car park, climbing steadily through heather and rough grass with views that just keep expanding.

Walkers will absolutely love this. It's not a casual stroll, but it's not a scramble either - just solid fell walking with genuine reward. The tarn itself is atmospheric rather than Instagram-famous: dark water, quiet, the kind of place where you hear your own breathing and the wind across the moors. Families with older kids (ten plus, really) will manage fine if everyone's up for a proper walk. Younger children will find it a bit much.

There's no visitor center, no facilities, no entry fee - it's just land. Best visited on a clear day because the views across Wensleydale are the real draw. Rain here is miserable rather than moody.
