The Enclosures near Leyburn are what archaeologists get excited about - Iron Age field systems and settlement remains that tell you how people actually lived around two thousand years ago. Walking the site, you're looking at earthworks and ditches that delineate ancient land divisions, the physical bones of a farming community that vanished centuries before the Romans showed up.

This is proper specialist terrain. History enthusiasts and archaeology buffs will spend a good couple of hours here picking apart the landscape, reading the bumps and hollows like a book. Casual visitors might find an hour enough, depending on how deep you want to go. There's no visitor centre or interpretation boards, so bringing a bit of background knowledge helps - or a decent guidebook.

The site sits well within a week's circuit of the Wensleydale area, and it pairs nicely with the Roman fort at Cataractonium further south if you're doing the full historical tour. Stablefell Holidays sits just three miles away, making it an easy morning or afternoon detour from your base. The surrounding countryside around Leyburn is genuinely lovely for walking, and you can easily string together several archaeological stops across the Dales.

Free access as far as we can tell, and no formal opening hours - it's the landscape itself. Best visited when the grass is short enough to read the earthworks properly, so late spring through early autumn works well.
