Y Foryd

The harbour at Y Foryd, just outside Caernarfon, feels frozen in time - a working fishing port where the real Wales still moves at its own pace. This isn't a polished tourist draw. It's a proper working waterfront where boats actually come and go, locals mend nets, and the smell of salt and diesel hangs thick in the air.

What you get here is authenticity. A short walk takes you around the quays to watch the tidal rhythms that have dictated life here for centuries. The views back towards Caernarfon Castle are genuinely lovely, and on clear days Snowdonia fills the horizon. There's a small beach and rocky foreshore that rewards a poke about, especially if you're into marine life or just fancy a quiet sit with a flask.

Families with younger kids might find twenty minutes enough, but walkers and photographers will linger. It's free to wander about - no gates, no admission fees. Go at low tide if you can, when you get more beach to explore. The light's best in late afternoon, casting everything gold.

If you're based at Morfa Lodge or Coed Helen, both within two miles, Y Foryd makes a natural morning or evening stroll. It won't set your heart racing, but that's rather the point. This is where you come to understand how the coast works when nobody's trying to impress you.
