Goleudy Tŵr Mawr

The lighthouse on Anglesey's southwestern tip is a proper landmark - white-painted tower rising abruptly from the rocky headland with nothing but sea beyond it. Goleudy Tŵr Mawr, or Tŵr Mawr Lighthouse as locals call it, has been guiding ships past this treacherous stretch of Welsh coast since the 1820s. The walk to reach it takes you across rough grassland with the Irish Sea sprawling across your view, and on a clear day you can see the Llyn Peninsula disappearing into the distance.

It's one of those places that rewards the effort more than you'd expect. The tower itself isn't open to the public - you can't climb it - but the setting is what matters. Photography types will spend a good hour here alone, and walkers tackling the coastal path naturally pass through. Children don't tend to linger long unless they're genuinely into maritime history, though the dramatic setting keeps most entertained for thirty minutes or so.

The nearest proper town is Caernarfon, about four miles inland, which makes this a natural stop if you're based at Morfa Lodge or Coed Helen Holiday Park - both strong choices in the area. The lighthouse walk connects nicely with the broader Anglesey coastal routes, so you needn't treat it as a standalone trip. Admission is free. Wind can be brutal here, so bring a proper jacket regardless of what the forecast claims.
