Y Foel

Standing at 511 metres, this modest peak north of Llanfyllin delivers proper hill walking without the crowds that swarm Snowdonia's bigger names. Y Foel's grassy summit offers sweeping views across the Berwyn Mountains and down into the Tanat Valley - well worth the steady climb through sheep-dotted pastures.

The route up is straightforward enough for reasonably fit families, though the pathless final approach means you'll need decent navigation skills when mist rolls in. Allow two to three hours for the round trip from the nearest parking spot along the minor roads.

Walkers will find this a cracking warm-up for bigger Welsh peaks, while photographers get excellent light in the early morning across the rolling borderland hills. It's not spectacular in the Pen y Fan sense, but there's something deeply satisfying about having a proper Welsh summit largely to yourself.

Staying at one of the caravan parks around Llanfyllin puts you right on the doorstep. Carmel Caravan Park sits closest at just over a mile away, with several other sites like Cae Nant Glamping and Camp Plas within easy striking distance. The peak works brilliantly as part of a Mid Wales walking holiday - quieter than the national parks but with all the hill-country character you could want.
