Mynydd Yr Esgyrn

The walk up Mynydd Yr Esgyrn is proper steep in places, but the payoff from the summit justifies the huffing and puffing. You're looking at panoramic views across mid-Wales from up here - on a clear day, the Brecon Beacons dominate the southern horizon, and the rolling countryside stretches out in every direction.

This is moorland walking at its most authentic. Boggy in wet weather, firm underfoot when it's been dry. The peak itself sits just outside Llanfyllin, making it a natural half-day outing if you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots. Cae Nant is your closest option at 2.5 miles away, and it's the kind of walk that pairs well with a night under canvas.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a casual stroll - allow two to three hours for a round trip depending on your pace and which route you take up. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might find the scramble tedious. No facilities at the summit, so bring water and something to eat.

The real draw here is the solitude. You won't fight crowds on Mynydd Yr Esgyrn like you might on some of the better-known peaks in Powys. The views alone make it worth the effort, and you can combine it with exploring Llanfyllin's market town charm afterwards. Camp Plas and Fir View Tan Y Ffridd are slightly further out if you prefer a quieter base.
