Yr Oerfa

The walk up Yr Oerfa is one of those rewarding little climbs that doesn't announce itself loudly but delivers proper views once you've earned them. It's not a major peak - nothing requiring ropes or hiking boots that cost more than your annual holiday budget - but the ascent from Llanfyllin is steady enough to feel like actual exercise, which is precisely why it works.

You get moorland and open country up there, the kind of landscape that makes Mid Wales special. On a clear day the outlook stretches across the Powys valleys in all directions. It's the sort of walk that takes around two hours there and back if you're not dawdling, though there's no harm in sitting about at the top with a flask and sandwiches.

Families with competent walkers will manage it fine. Younger kids might find the moorland a bit exposed and featureless - they tend to prefer summits with something dramatic at the top. Serious hill-baggers will consider it a warm-up. But if you're after a proper walk that clears your head without eating an entire day, it fits the bill.

You won't find cafes or facilities at the peak, which is rather the point. Llanfyllin is your supply town - grab what you need there. If you're camping or glamping in the area, Cae Nant and Camp Plas make ideal bases within a few miles. Slot this into a wider exploration of the region's walks rather than treating it as a destination in itself.
