Bryn Coch

The walk up Bryn Coch takes you through proper Mid Wales moorland, which means you're never quite sure if the next ridge will be the summit or just another false peak. From Llanfyllin it's a straightforward enough outing - about an hour's climb depending on your fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath. The views across Powys from the top are genuinely fine, rolling valleys and distant hills stretching out in all directions. On a clear day you can see for miles.

This is walkers' territory, full stop. Families with young kids might find it a bit of a slog - there's nothing to do at the top except admire the landscape and eat a sandwich - but anyone who likes getting their legs working and breathing fresh air will find it worthwhile. The path is straightforward enough, though it can be muddy after rain.

Being this close to Llanfyllin means you've got several holiday parks within easy reach - Tanat Holiday Park is barely over two miles away, so you can base yourself there and use it as a proper walking base rather than just popping up for the view. Valley View and Gwerniago Campsite sit at similar distances, making this part of the valley ideal if you want to combine a few walks with some actual downtime at a park.

There's no visitor centre or facilities at the peak itself, so bring water and something to eat. The real pull here is the walking itself and the sense of being out in the hills without crowds. Go for it if you're after a solid day out, but manage your expectations - it's a decent peak, not a dramatic landmark.
