Wynford Wood

You'll find Wynford Wood tucked away in the Dorset countryside, a proper working forest that doesn't get rammed with tourists the way some of the county's better-known spots do. It's the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think - or hear the woodland properly, anyway. Paths wind through deciduous and coniferous trees, and on a decent day the light filters through in that way that makes you remember why you bothered leaving the tent.

This is walker territory, full stop. If you're after a gentle stroll with kids, fine - they'll spot birds and maybe a deer if you're lucky. But if you want to drag toddlers round for the sake of it, they'll be bored within twenty minutes. Adults who like proper woodland without the theme-park feel will get far more from an hour or two here.

It's free to visit, which is always a bonus. No visitor centre, no facilities that I'm aware of - just the trees. Allow two hours if you're taking your time, an hour if you know where you're going. Bridport is the nearest town for coffee and supplies beforehand.

If you're staying at one of the glamping sites nearby - Dorset Valley is closest at just over three miles - this makes a solid morning activity before heading out to the coast. Don't expect manicured trails or signage everywhere. Bring a map or download offline navigation. Go early or late in the day to dodge what few visitors do turn up.
