Shipton Hill

Standing at just over 200 metres, this modest peak offers proper views across the Dorset countryside without the slog of climbing Golden Cap nearby. The walk up from Bridport takes about 45 minutes through rolling farmland, and while it's not exactly challenging, the steady incline will get your heart rate up nicely.

Families with older children will manage it fine, though anyone with a pushchair should think twice - the paths can get muddy and there are a few stiles to negotiate. Dog walkers love it here, and you'll often find yourself sharing the summit with a pack of energetic spaniels.

What makes Shipton Hill worth the effort is the 360-degree panorama from the top. On a clear day you can spot the coast at West Bay, the Marshwood Vale stretching inland, and the distinctive outline of Pilsdon Pen to the north. It's not the most dramatic viewpoint in Dorset, but it's reliably good and rarely crowded.

Allow two hours for the round trip, including time to appreciate the view and catch your breath. Early morning visits reward you with the best light for photos and fewer fellow walkers.
