Whinhill Copse

Dense woodland paths wind through this quiet copse just north of Bridport, where ancient oaks and beech trees create a proper canopy overhead. You'll find it's one of those places locals know about but rarely gets crowded - even on sunny weekends.

Families with younger children will appreciate the relatively flat terrain and well-defined tracks that make navigation straightforward. The main loop takes about 45 minutes at a gentle pace, though you could easily spend longer if you're into spotting woodland birds or collecting conkers in autumn. Dog walkers seem to favour the place, and rightly so.

What strikes you most is how quickly the noise from the A35 fades once you're properly amongst the trees. It's not spectacular in the way Dorset's coastal walks are, but there's something restorative about the dappled light and earthy smell after rain.

The copse works well as a morning activity if you're staying at one of the holiday parks around Bridport - Dorset Valley Glamping and Hidden Valley Dorset are both within easy reach. Perfect for burning off energy before heading to West Bay for lunch, or as a peaceful alternative when the coast gets too busy in summer. Pack a thermos and make it a proper woodland adventure.
