Eggardon Hill Fort

Centuries of wind have carved this Iron Age hillfort into something properly dramatic. Eggardon Hill Fort sits high above the Dorset countryside near Bridport, its massive earthwork ramparts still clearly visible after 2,500 years. The walk up from the car park is steep but short - about 15 minutes through bracken and gorse before you reach the plateau.

Once at the top, the views stretch from the Mendips to Portland Bill on a clear day. The fort itself covers about 20 acres, with impressive double ramparts on three sides where ancient Britons built their defences. History enthusiasts will love tracing the original entrances and imagining life in this windswept stronghold.

Families with older children who don't mind a proper hike will get the most from this one. Little ones might struggle with the climb and find the exposed summit too blustery. The site is always open and free to explore, though parking can be tricky in the narrow lanes below.
