Wynch Bank Plantation

A proper woodland walk awaits at Wynch Bank Plantation, just outside Bishop Auckland. This isn't some manicured nature reserve - it's genuine forest where you can actually breathe and think without dodging crowds.

The plantation sits in a valley with decent tree cover and a few marked paths that wind through the woodland. It's the sort of place where you might spot a deer if you're lucky, though realistically you'll spend an hour or so wandering among established trees without hitting the same spot twice. The ground can get muddy, particularly after rain, so proper boots matter.

Walkers will get the most from Wynch Bank. Families with young kids might find it a bit limited - there's no visitor centre, no café, no facilities to speak of. It's just trees, paths, and quiet. That's either brilliant or dull depending on your tolerance for authentic woodland without the gift shop.

The beauty of basing yourself at one of the nearby caravan parks - Leekworth (3.7 miles away) or Mickleton Mill (4 miles) - is you can combine a Wynch Bank wander with proper attractions in and around Bishop Auckland without overdoing the driving. It works as a morning walk before heading elsewhere, rather than a full-day destination. Allow two hours maximum, less if you've got restless passengers in the car.
