Winholes Plantation

The woodland at Winholes, just outside Bridport, is a proper working plantation rather than a manicured tourist spot, and that's exactly what makes it worth a visit. You're walking through ranks of conifers - Douglas firs mostly - where the canopy gets dense enough that even on a bright day there's a cool, quiet dimness underneath. The forest floor is soft with needles and moss. It's the sort of place where you notice how little sound travels through thick plantation woodland.

This is best for walkers who want a straightforward woodland stretch without having to navigate open moorland or endless calf-burning climbs. Kids will manage it fine if they're not expecting a playground at the end. The main appeal is the walk itself - the filtered light, the smell of the trees, the way the landscape just feels calmer in here. Allow an hour or so, though you can stretch it depending on which paths you take.

Practically speaking, access looks open to the public, though there's no visitor infrastructure - no cafe, no car park attendant, no entrance fee signposting. Turn up and walk. It's close enough to Bridport that you could combine it with a proper meal in town afterwards, which is worth doing.

If you're based at one of the glamping spots in the area - Litton Lakes or Hidden Valley Dorset are both under five miles away - this makes a sensible morning outing before the weather turns. Not dramatic, but honest woodland walking.
