Will Allen Hole

A proper Yorkshire cave tucked into the hillside above Leyburn - nothing fancy, just a natural opening in the limestone that rewards a bit of poking about. Will Allen Hole is small enough that you'll have seen the main chamber within fifteen minutes, but that's rather the point. It's the kind of place locals know about and visitors tend to miss entirely.

The entrance is straightforward enough if you've got a map or decent sense of direction. Inside, the passage opens into a modest cavern with pale stone walls and the kind of silence that makes you realise how loud the outside world is. Bring a torch if you want to see past the obvious bits. It's not Clapham Cave or those vast underground networks you get further south - this is intimate geology, the sort of thing that reminds you the Pennines have proper history written into their rock.

Historically minded types and keen cavers will find it worthwhile; small kids might find twenty minutes about their limit. It's free to visit and takes almost no time to reach from Leyburn town centre, making it a decent stop if you're based at Stablefell Holidays nearby. Don't expect grand formations or guided tours. What you get is an unmanicured slice of North Yorkshire limestone country, which for some of us is exactly the appeal.
