Wildmires Plantation

Walking into Wildmires Plantation feels like stepping into proper Scottish woodland without the postcard crowds. It's a working forest near Moffat where the trees actually tower over you - Sitka spruce and larch planted decades ago, now dense enough that the light filters through in shafts. You're here for the trails mostly, weaving between dark green rows with the occasional opening where views crack open across the Lowlands.

This is walker territory, no question about it. The paths are well-maintained but can get muddy after rain, and there's a real sense of remoteness despite being just outside Moffat. It's the kind of place where you could spend two hours ambling through without seeing another soul, which some people find restorative and others find a bit too quiet. Kids will manage fine if they're the exploring type, though there's no playground or café, so don't expect amenities.

As a forest it's functional rather than dramatic - you won't find a viewpoint postcard view here, but that's rather the point. It's free to access and worth combining with a stay at one of the nearby caravan sites like Moffat Camping and Caravanning Club Site or Howslack Farm, both within easy striking distance. Allow a couple of hours if you're taking it leisurely, less if you're just after a brisk forest stomp. Early autumn's probably best - the light's sharper and there's fewer midges.
