About Whittle Hill

The climb up Whittle Hill rewards you with proper Pennine views that stretch across Lancashire on a clear day. It's not a dramatic peak - nothing like the Lake District fells - but it's an honest walk that takes you above the moorland sprawl around Bury with minimal fuss. Most people can knock this out in under two hours return, depending on fitness and which route you fancy. The summit itself is modest, no cairn or shelter to speak of, just open moorland with decent sightlines. Walkers will get the most from it. History buffs might be less gripped, though the moorland landscape tells its own story of industrial Lancashire. Families with reasonably confident walkers can manage it fine - just watch the ground conditions after rain, which can be bog-heavy on the approach. If you're staying at Dearden Wood just over a mile away, this makes an excellent morning outing before heading elsewhere. Burrs Country Park Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, a bit further afield at four miles, is still close enough that you could easily make this your first or final walk of a stay. The moorland setting feels remote despite Bury being within touching distance. Go early or late in the day to dodge school groups if that bothers you. There's no tea van at the top, no visitor facilities - bring water and snacks. Free to access, naturally. The walk matters more than the destination here, but that's not a criticism.
