Holden Wood Reservoir

Water this far north in Lancashire tends to be either industrial or unremarkable, but Holden Wood Reservoir breaks that mould. It's a proper stretch of open water surrounded by moorland that feels surprisingly wild for somewhere just outside Bury. The walk around it takes the best part of an hour if you're not rushed, and there's genuine peace to be had - moorhens, the odd cormorant, and the kind of silence you forget exists near towns.

This is fundamentally a walker's spot. Don't come expecting facilities or a cafe - there aren't any. What you get instead is access to decent moorland paths, decent views across the water when the weather plays ball, and enough space to actually escape other people. Families with older kids will manage fine; anything under eight might find it a touch long if they're not keen walkers. Birdwatchers should absolutely have this on their list.

The reservoir is free to access, though parking can be tight on weekends. Early morning or weekday visits are the smart call. Allow two hours minimum if you want a proper walk rather than just a quick look.

If you're based at Dearden Wood or Rossendale Holiday Cottages nearby, it's an easy add-on to a morning. Burrs Country Park Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite is a touch further but still within easy reach. The moorland around here is the real draw - Holden Wood Reservoir is just one reason to explore it properly.
