Higher Mill

Higher Mill sits just outside Bury, a working textile museum that takes you straight into Lancashire's industrial past without any of the dusty stuffiness you might expect. The mill itself is the real draw - a proper functioning cotton mill where you can watch machinery actually doing what it was built for, not just standing about as a monument.

The whole place tells the story of the workers who kept Lancashire's mills running. You'll see the looms in action, understand the processes that made this region wealthy, and get a genuine sense of what the job entailed. It's hands-on enough to keep kids engaged for a couple of hours, though whether they'll find it exciting depends entirely on how much they've already learned about the Industrial Revolution.
