Whitber Hill

The walk up Whitber Hill from Settle rewards you with proper Pennine views across some of Yorkshire's finest limestone country. It's not a huge undertaking - most people manage it in a couple of hours from town, making it ideal if you've got an afternoon free between other Dales activities.

You get wide-open moorland at the top, and on a clear day the vista stretches across Ribblesdale toward Pen-y-ghent and Whernside. The path is well-trodden and manageable, though the approach can be muddy depending on weather. This suits walkers after something less serious than a full Yorkshire Three Peaks, though families with younger legs might find it a bit of a slog - there's not much shelter up there, and the final push gets steeper.

Settle itself is only a short drive away, with the Settle-Carlisle Railway running through town if you fancy making a day of it beyond just the hill. For camping, Ribblesdale Pods sits closest at just over a mile out, offering luxury glamping if you want proper creature comforts after a day on the fells. Philpin Farm and The Dalesbridge both sit about five miles further out and give you more space if you're after a traditional campsite experience.

Go early or later in the day to dodge other walkers - the top gets surprisingly busy on weekends. Spring's probably best when the gritstone's dry enough and you're not battling winter wind.
