Giggleswick Memorial Bridge

Just outside Settle, the Giggleswick Memorial Bridge spans a stretch of the Ribble valley that feels properly remote despite being minutes from town. It's a modest crossing - nothing grand - but the reserve around it makes it worth the short drive or walk from wherever you're staying in the area.

The main draw is the riverbank itself. You get decent woodland on both sides, a few open meadows, and if you time it right, proper wildlife watching opportunities. Kingfishers along the water if you're lucky. The bridge itself is more of a marker than a destination - it's the walk around it that counts. Most people spend 45 minutes to an hour here, moving at an easy pace and maybe stopping to listen for birds.

It works best for keen walkers and birdwatchers rather than families after a packed itinerary. Kids won't get much from it unless they're into spotting insects and splashing in streams. The paths are straightforward but can get muddy after rain, so proper boots matter.

Essentially free to access - there's no formal gate or fee system that I encountered. Worth combining with a base at one of the nearby campsites like Peaks and Pods or The Dalesbridge Campsite, both close enough for a morning outing before exploring the bigger Dales attractions. It's the kind of spot you'd recommend if someone asked for somewhere quiet to decompress, not somewhere you'd rearrange your holiday around. The Settle area has plenty to offer beyond this, but if you're already in the region, don't skip it.
