Catrigg Force

Water tumbles down a limestone face in a thin, graceful ribbon - that's Catrigg Force, a proper little waterfall tucked into the Settle area of North Yorkshire. It's not one of those dramatic thundering cascades that stops traffic, but rather a delicate thing that feels genuinely peaceful once you find it.

The walk to get there is the real draw. You're winding through moorland and dale, crossing fields, getting a genuine sense of what the Yorkshire Dales actually feel like rather than just passing through. The waterfall itself sits in a small rocky amphitheatre - very pleasing if you catch the light right, especially after rain when the flow picks up.

This one's for walkers rather than casual drive-by visitors. Families with older kids will manage fine if they're used to countryside rambles. You'll want a good hour minimum, possibly two if you're taking photos or stopping for a rest. There's no visitor infrastructure - no café, no visitor centre, just the fall and the landscape.

The real value is as part of a broader Dales exploration. Base yourself at one of the nearby sites like Ribblesdale Pods or The Dalesbridge Campsite and string together a few walks - Catrigg Force works nicely as a loop with other local features. Free to visit, naturally. Go mid-week if you can; weekends pull in walkers who've had the same idea.

Worth the detour? Only if you're already walking the area. Don't drive from Manchester specially for it.
