Sulber Gate

You'll find Sulber Gate by following the footpaths that wind up from Settle, and it's worth every step of the climb. This limestone gateway cuts through the hillside like nature's own archway, and standing beneath it you get proper views across Ribblesdale that justify the effort. The rock formation itself is striking - two vertical slabs with a natural opening between them, weathered pale and dramatic against the moorland sky.

Walkers get the most from this spot. It's not a quick five-minute stop; allow a good hour or more if you're coming from town, and longer if you plan to loop it with nearby paths. The walk itself is the point - gentle at first, then steeper as you climb through rough grassland. In autumn the light through the gate is particularly fine, catching the limestone in an almost golden way. Summer's busy with families, which does take the edge off the solitude, but early morning or late afternoon you'll mostly have it to yourself.

Based near Settle, you're well-positioned for this. Ribblesdale Pods and The Dalesbridge Campsite are both within a few miles, making it an easy morning walk before breakfast or an evening expedition when the camping crowd settles in. The gate isn't difficult terrain, but it is exposed once you're up there, so check the weather. Boots matter more than experience. Free to visit, of course - it's just moorland. A genuine highlight if you're hiking the Dales, though not worth a special trip on its own.
