Whalley Viaduct

Victorian engineering on a proper grand scale - that's what stops you in your tracks when you round the corner near Clitheroe and see Whalley Viaduct. This stone railway bridge, built in the 1870s, strides across the Ribble Valley like something from a Brunel sketch, all sweeping arches and red sandstone solidity. It's the kind of thing that makes you actually pull over, even if you're just driving through Lancashire.

You can walk underneath it, which is where the scale really hits home. The arches dwarf you. On a clear day, standing beneath those massive spans, you get proper views up the valley - the fells rise either side, and if the light's right, you can see why the Victorians thought this view was worth building such a monumental structure to cross it. The viaduct carries a working railway, so you might catch trains rumbling overhead while you're looking up. There's something rather special about that.

Walkers love it. The footpath around the base is straightforward, takes maybe thirty minutes without rushing, and the walk from Clitheroe (about a mile away) is pleasant enough.
