Nick of Pendle

The walk up Nick of Pendle isn't for the faint-hearted, but the effort pays off with proper views across Lancashire. This moorland pass sits between Pendle Hill and Higher Pendle, and the ridge walk itself is the main draw - you get wide-open views of the Ribble Valley spreading out below, with Clitheroe tucked away in the distance. On a clear day you can see for miles. The terrain is moorland and rough grass, boggy in places, so boots are essential rather than optional.

Walkers will love this. It's not a gentle stroll - expect steep sections and exposed ground - but if you're comfortable with proper hill walking, it's rewarding. Most people allow two to three hours for the round trip depending on fitness and where you start from (Sabden or Barley villages are typical starting points). Families with young kids or anyone after a casual amble should look elsewhere.

The nearby holiday parks make this accessible for a longer stay - Pendle View Holiday Park is just 1.8 miles away, and Clitheroe Camping and Caravanning Club Site is 3.2 miles out, both decent bases for tackling the walk and exploring the wider area. The landscape here is genuinely dramatic, especially in autumn or after rain when the moorland shows its colours. It's worth the detour if you're touring Lancashire and fancy something more challenging than a park-based circuit.
