Westfield Park

Just outside Berwick-upon-Tweed lies a proper nature reserve that punches above its weight. Westfield Park is the sort of place you'd miss entirely if you weren't looking for it, which is precisely why it's worth the detour.

It's a working landscape rather than a manicured attraction - marshland, rough grassland, and scrubby woodland where birds actually want to be. Expect waders, wildfowl, and if you're lucky, raptors wheeling overhead. You won't find visitor centres or interpretation boards here; it's the real thing. Bring binoculars and patience. Photographers will find something worthwhile, particularly in spring and autumn when migration's happening.

Families with older kids and keen walkers get the most from this. Young children might find it a bit slow - there's no playground, no café, and the paths are what they are. Couple of hours max unless you're genuinely into birdwatching. The terrain is boggy after rain, so decent boots aren't a suggestion.

Free admission seems likely given its nature reserve status, though I'd check locally in Berwick. Haven Berwick Holiday Centre sits barely a quarter-mile away, making this an easy morning outing from your caravan. Ord House Country Park two miles further on offers more conventional family facilities if you want variety across your break.

The Northumberland coast around here has a rugged beauty that draws people back. Westfield Park fits neatly into that - it's what this corner of England actually looks like when you stop looking at postcards.
