Royal Border Bridge

The Royal Border Bridge is impossible to miss as you approach Berwick-upon-Tweed from the south. This Victorian engineering marvel spans the River Tweed with 28 arches in deep red stone, and it's genuinely impressive - one of those structures that makes you slow down and actually look up.

Designed by Robert Stephenson and completed in 1850, it's a working railway bridge that still carries trains across the Scottish border. You can walk underneath it or cross on foot if a train isn't passing, though the real draw is seeing it from the riverside or from Berwick's quayside. The engineering is remarkable for the period - those soaring arches were a big deal at the time.

It's free to view and accessible all year, which is the main thing in its favour. The walk takes five minutes, maybe ten if you're taking photos and admiring the stonework. It suits everyone: kids find trains exciting if you catch one crossing, walkers get a decent vantage point from the riverside paths, and anyone interested in industrial heritage will appreciate what Stephenson managed here without modern kit.

The downside? It's a stop rather than a destination. You'll see it in twenty minutes and move on. If you're staying at Haven Berwick Holiday Centre or Berwick Seaview nearby, it's worth the stroll to the bridge before heading back to camp. Combine it with the town walls - now that's proper Berwick. But don't expect to spend an afternoon here.
