Berwick-upon-Tweed Castle and Ramparts

The walls are what get you first. Walking the ramparts of Berwick-upon-Tweed, you're literally standing on centuries of military strategy - these are among the most complete Elizabethan fortifications in England, and they wrap around the old town like a stone embrace. The castle itself is less grand than you might expect; what survives is mainly the keep, which dates back to the 12th century. But that's rather the point. Berwick's been fought over so many times that what remains is honest rather than showstopping.

You can walk the full circuit of the walls - takes about 20 minutes at a decent pace - and the views across the Tweed estuary and towards Scotland are genuinely good. History enthusiasts will appreciate the layered story: Norman keep, then the Elizabethan military engineering when the English couldn't quite decide if they were defending this place from the Scots or just being stubborn about it. Families with younger kids might find the castle ruins a bit underwhelming on their own, though the wall walk itself is manageable and reasonably safe.

The whole site is free to wander, which is excellent value. Head here in late morning before the midday crowds settle in. If you're based at Haven Berwick Holiday Centre or any of the nearby caravan parks - Berwick Seaview is less than a mile away - this is a genuine morning out rather than a major expedition. Combine it with a walk into Berwick town centre and you've got a solid half-day sorted. The ramparts themselves are proper impressive; the castle is the supporting act.
