Wayoh Reservoir

The water here is genuinely striking - a proper expanse of blue cutting through moorland just outside Bury that most people miss entirely. Wayoh Reservoir sits in the hills with decent views across the surrounding fells, and it's the kind of place where you can walk a good loop without crowds getting in the way.

You're looking at a straightforward water supply reservoir, but don't let that put you off. There's a decent walking circuit around the perimeter - takes a couple of hours if you're not rushing - and the path runs close enough to the water to feel proper immersive. The moorland backdrop gives it a wilder edge than you'd expect so close to a town. Birdwatchers do well here; the reservoir attracts wildfowl throughout the year.

It works best for walkers and anyone after a bit of landscape without the effort of a full peak bag. Families with young kids might find it bit limited after an hour unless they're keen on ducks and water-spotting. The walk itself is easy going, mostly level terrain, though the wind can catch you on the open moorland side - bring a proper layer.

Access appears free, though facilities are minimal - no cafes or visitor centre to speak of. It slots nicely into a weekend if you're based at either Dearden Wood or Burrs Country Park Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, both within a short drive. Go midweek in spring or autumn and you'll practically have the place to yourself.
