Waun Goch

The walk up Waun Goch is one of those proper no-nonsense Welsh peaks that rewards you without requiring a technical scramble or a full day's commitment. It sits above Dolgellau, and most people tackle it as a straightforward hill walk rather than a serious mountain expedition.

Once you're up there, the views across Snowdonia are genuinely good. You get sweeping sightlines toward the higher peaks, and on a clear day the whole landscape just opens up. The summit itself is fairly exposed - wind can be a genuine factor up here - but that's part of the appeal if you want to feel like you're actually standing on something rather than wandering through moorland.

This is proper terrain for walkers with a bit of fitness. Families with young kids might struggle with the steeper sections, though determined ones will manage it fine. History buffs won't find much - it's a working landscape, not a tourist attraction with plaques and heritage boards. What you get instead is a sense of the raw Snowdonia environment that most visitors never experience because they're queuing for Snowdon itself.

Worth allowing two to three hours for the full walk depending on your pace. There's no visitor centre, car park facilities, or waymarking babying you through it, which honestly makes it feel more authentic than some of the hyped-up alternatives nearby.
