About Dolgellau

Mountain peaks loom overhead wherever you turn in this slate-quarrying town that sits snug in the Mawddach Valley. Dolgellau feels properly Welsh - stone cottages line narrow streets, and you'll hear more Cymraeg than English in the local shops. The old market square still has that authentic feel you won't find in tourist hotspots further north.

Cadair Idris dominates the southern horizon, but there's plenty more climbing to be done. Serious walkers head for Mynydd Cymerau or tackle the challenging ascent of Rhobell Ganol. Less demanding but equally rewarding are the paths up Foel Ddu or Moel Cae'r-defaid, both offering cracking views across Snowdonia without the crowds you'd find on the bigger peaks.

History buffs shouldn't miss the remains at Brithdir Roman Fort, where you can still make out the defensive earthworks. The nearby Gwanas-Fawr Roman Marching Camp tells a similar story of Roman occupation in these valleys. Both sites are a proper trek from the town centre, but well worth the effort.

Getting here means driving through some of Wales' most spectacular countryside. The A470 winds down from the north through forests and past lakes, while the southern approach via the A487 is equally dramatic. Machynlleth lies 20 miles south if you need bigger shops or transport links.

Staying at somewhere like Coed y Brenin Forest Camp puts you right in the heart of mountain biking country, with trails radiating out in all directions. The forest park itself offers everything from gentle family routes to black-grade descents that'll test even experienced riders. After a day on the peaks or the bike trails, Dolgellau's pubs provide the perfect end to your adventures.
